SetupVPN is a solid browser-designed VPN tailored mainly for Google Chrome but works also in Firefox and Opera.
SetupVPN offers a “lifetime free plan” which comes with no bandwidth limitations, allowing you to share as much traffic as you want (unlike other free VPN products which limit data transfer at some point).
The server network isn’t very broad but still quite good for Free VPN. There are 18 locations around the world, including countries in Europe, North&South America, Asia and Africa. They have approximately 100 servers.
SetupVPN’s speeds are far from good. Actually, it mainly depends on the distance. It holds up if the location is close to the server. But still, during our testing – speed was quite disappointing. Encryption for this type of product is solid though.
Keep in mind that this is not a real VPN application and it won’t encrypt completely your bandwidth (e.g. BitTorrent, games, FTP client) to do so you have to download Free VPN client or buy a VPN service or check at least our comparison of best VPNs for Chrome.
Pricing & Discounts – How much does SetupVPN Premium Account cost?
As we mentioned, the SetupVPN service comes with a free version. The company claims that the service will be free forever and users won't have to pay anything in the future.
Besides that, there is a Premium Account which unblocks several locations and opens up a feature called WebRTC Leak Shield. Premium plans start with unusual length – 4$ per week and continue to $6 per month, $35 per year up to maximum 2-year plan for $50.
Also be aware, there is no mention about Money Back Guarantee. So rather think twice before you buy!
User Interface – Is SetupVPN easy to use?
As a matter of fact, one of SetupVPN’s calling cards is simplicity. Since there aren’t many complicated configuration options or features. Installation, since it's just a Chrome add-on, is really simple. But what is a no go for us, especially in this segment, is required registration (following with email validation).
One of the benefits is the localization of the App. They offer 15 different languages. Selection of servers is straight forward and the app is really intuitive. You can even bookmark your favorite location for quick access.
The overall look is a bit outdated and does not really meet current standards. Also in terms of content styling, everything seems a bit amateurish and unpolished.
Does SetupVPN for Chrome Unblock YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, HBO GO, Amazon Prime, & BBC iPlayer?
During our testing, Setup VPN worked well with YouTube, Google, and Facebook. Unfortunately, we have not been able to connect to Netflix and Hulu.
The same problem we had with BBC iPlayer but that wasn't a big surprise since BBC iPlayer blocks nearly all VPN services, except HideMyAss VPN which recently even announced new feature IP Stickinees for Improved Netflix and BBC iPlayer streaming.
How to add SetupVPN Free VPN to Chrome Browser?
Adding SetupVPN to your Google Chrome Browser is easy but the registration and email validation complicate it a bit. Follow these 4 steps below.
- Go to SetupVPN Chrome Store page.
- Click the button “Add to Chrome” in right upper corner of the overlay window.
- Create an account and validate your email address.
- All done! Enjoy SetupVPN for Chrome ?
Conclusion
SetupVPN has 100 servers in 18 countries, which is quite a lot for a Free Chrome extension. Speed is limited and a bit unreliable. If you are looking for a quick content unblocker (or you want to just temporarily hide or mask your location) and you are not really keen on being 100% private during browsing, SetupVPN might be a good fit for you.
Be aware that the company providing this service is unknown and therefore the whole service is really unreliable. What we also did not like is required registration. There are tones of similar VPNs for Chrome which won't force you to create an account. Have a look! 🙂
